Ranjita Mohanty (Ph.D)

Ranjita Mohanty is an Indian sociologist based in New Delhi.  Her research areas include: political economy of development, public policy, social movements, civil society,  and democracy. Within these broad areas her focus has been on the poor and socially marginalized groups of tribal, lower caste and women.

She is interested in the intersection of theory, practice and policy. Having worked with a  cross- section of institutions that include universities, research organizations, grassroots groups, and development aid organizations, her research repertoire  contains social science theories, field knowledge, and the interface between knowledge and practice.  Her research is interdisciplinary in nature and has borrowed from social anthropology, political science and history.

She has been a Fulbright Senior Research Fellow, Anthropology Department, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA;  Visiting Scholar, University of Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa;  Senior Fellow, Society For Participatory Research in Asia, New Delhi.

Currently she is working as an independent researcher and research consultant. As a research consultant she has conducted  studies for several renowned institutions such as Institute of Development Studies, UK; International Development Research Center, Canada; Swiss Agency for Development and Co-operation, New Delhi; World Bank, New Delhi; Poorer Area Civil Society Programme of DFID, New Delhi; Center for Policy Research, New Delhi.
